Though her name may not immediately strike a chord, Barlow’s voice has been a familiar presence for decades—gracing live performances with the Moody Blues and Sarah McLachlan, collaborating with the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Bob Seger, and Joe Cocker, and even lending her distinctive tone to countless commercial jingles. Now, with Walking Around This Town, she steps firmly into the spotlight, drawing on more than 30 years of experience as a touring and studio musician.
Produced by six-time Grammy nominee Dave Darling (Stray Cats, Glen Campbell, Tom Waits, Janiva Magness), Walking Around This Town was recorded in just one week at Darling’s North Hollywood studio, capturing the raw energy of a live band performance. The album finds Barlow navigating the themes of resilience, love, aging, and womanhood with unflinching honesty and a remarkable range—moving seamlessly from the rock ‘n’ roll drive of “Million Miles an Hour” to the soulful ache of “Brave” and the delicate vulnerability of “Sorry.”
Featuring contributions from an all-star lineup of musicians, including blues-rock guitarist Philip Sayce, bassist Paul Bushnell (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill), guitarist John Schroeder (Pomplamoose), Dave Raven (Shelby Lynne) and fiddle player Aubrey Richmond (Shooter Jennings), the record is a deeply personal and cathartic collection of songs. From reflections on caring for her late mother to meditations on midlife and a heartfelt love song to her husband, Walking Around This Town captures the many chapters of Barlow’s life with warmth, grit, and authenticity.
“I’ve had a lot of great opportunities over my career, and this album is just the latest,” Barlow says. “I realize it’s not often a woman singer my age gets a chance to keep doing this. I’m grateful every day I still get to make music.”
