Acclaimed Grammy-nominated artist Aaron Lee Tasjan has released his dreamy new track “Lydia’s Boots,” off his forthcoming album Get Over It, Underdog (out July 17th). Click here to listen now.
Inspired by a transcendent musical performance from a fellow artist and friend, “Lydia’s Boots” is a hypnotic homage to a mesmerizing experience. "I started writing Lydia's Boots during the middle of one of the best concerts I've ever seen,” says Tasjan. “My friend, Lydia Loveless was playing the Nashville, TN stop of her tour at The Blue Room in December of 2023. Sparkling through the corridors of power in a pair of silver Betsy Johnson cowboy boots, she transcended time and space as only a true rock'n'roll poet can. As the ending chords of her 5th song of the set rang out, I pulled a small pad of paper from my pocket and wrote down, ‘all I wanna do is dance around in Lydia's boots,’ then put it away and let her put her spell on me.”
He adds, “The next day, I set out to take the line that had come to me at her show and flesh it out into a song about bearing witness to someone who is so uniquely themselves, it makes you wish you could walk a mile in their shoes: to know what it might be like to feel how she feels. It's a longing feeling but a beautiful one, nonetheless and I just knew I had to record it for this album. The ways in which songwriters inspire each other can often go unspoken in my experience. But the inspiration that sparked this song for me just felt too powerful to keep to myself. I had to share it in hopes that it would encourage others to inspire and be inspired."
On Get Over It, Underdog, Tasjan engages with both personal and cultural fault lines where the album moves seamlessly between unabashed social commentary and introspective storytelling. Comprised of 11 masterfully crafted songs, the new collection examines the mythology of the American underdog, unraveling its contradictions and complexities with wit, urgency, and a deeply human perspective. The record confronts the idea that the same qualities that elevate an underdog can just as easily lead to their undoing, offering a nuanced portrait of resilience, identity, and self-perception.
There is a deep melancholy that surrounds the release of Get Over It, Underdog as a pivotal figure behind was the late, beloved songwriter Todd Snider. Snider’s friendship and mentorship helped Tasjan with both practical direction and philosophical clarity during a period of artistic uncertainty. Snider’s inspiration can be felt in the album’s sense of conviction and independence. The two co-wrote “The Real.” Snider’s passing shortly after the album’s completion casts a long shadow, but his spirit endures in the record’s restless creativity and commitment to artistic honesty.
Produced by Tasjan alongside longtime collaborator Mark Miller, Get Over It, Underdog is as thought-provoking as it is immediate. It reaffirms Aaron Lee Tasjan as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary Americana—an artist unafraid to challenge, question, and ultimately connect.
