Kirk's Corner 005: 'Déjà Vu' Album Review

Déjà Vu. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young It was 49 years ago. This album instantly became one of my favorites-- and it remains so today. I thought it captured the time perfectly. And it stands the test of time. So many classics. "Teach Your Children," still on the airwaves today, and "Woodstock," an anthem for the times. The title track, "Helpless," "Carry On," "Our House"-- ok, at this rate, I'll be naming all 10 tracks. Great as all those tracks are, though, my favorite might be the David Crosby penned "Almost Cut My Hair" (and, a confession--Mr. Crosby's songs tend to be my least favorite of the quartet's). "Almost Cut My Hair" doesn't have those trademark harmony vocals, and it might not be as melodic as other tracks. But, something about it spoke to me then. And, it's invariably the first track I think of when I think of this album. Many call this record a landmark and a rock classic. I'll simply say that for me, Déjà Vu is one of the 10 best albums ever. Maybe you had to be there then. But, give it a few listens now, and see what you think. Meanwhile, maybe I'll hold off on getting a haircut just a little longer . . .
